Meditation and Mindfulness for Teens
THIS GROUP IS ON BREAK AND NOT CURRENTLY MEETING. CHECK BACK SOON ABOUT PLANS TO RESUME!
Teens, like adults, experience high levels of anxiety, but unlike adults they haven’t learned how to manage it. Some of the situations that cause teens anxiety are:
Dealing with parents expectations of them
Conflict with siblings
Stress associated with pressure from school and teachers
Peer pressure for engaging in risky behavior
The Teen Mindfulness Group seeks to be a safe space for teenagers age 13-19 to find support in dealing with stress by practicing mindfulness and meditation techniques. The group is lead by a former high school teacher and meditation instructor. Each meeting focuses on a single topic that affects teens but is also flexible enough to allow for spontaneous conversations.
The group follows this format:
Introduce topic: 5 min
Meditation instruction: 15 minutes
Meditation practice: 15 minutes
Open sharing related to topic: 20 min
Closing: 5 min
Teens are asked to wear appropriate and comfortable clothing that allows for movement and sitting (e.g. no skirts, etc).
The group is not strictly Buddhist-centered but seeks to incorporate all traditions and techniques (secular and non-secular) that help teenagers become more aware of their thoughts and how those thoughts can contribute to stress, worry, and unhealthy behaviors.
